The recent wave of technological advances has affected numerous fields in our lives, including our hobbies and professions. Digital photography can be viewed upon as either of these, since it is mostly used as a fun activity, but it can also be something that one would build his professional career upon. Digital photography is a term used to define any form of electronic photography, as opposed to film photography.
Actually, digital photography is becoming overly popular and it is slowly, but surely, replacing film photography, especially in professional environments. Its advantages are obvious and they’re not something to avoid either. The biggest advantages that digital photography brought in comparison to film photography include high picture management capabilities and the lack of a development process.
If you’ve ever used a film camera, you might remember how annoying it was that you could only store a small set of pictures on a film, without the ability to delete them once they were made. They were quite difficult to preview either, which would often lead to frustrating situations and you could hardly intervene in changing something about the photo after it has been made. Well digital photography corrects all these, since the internal memory of most electronic cameras will allow you to store hundreds if not thousands of pictures and you will have the possibility of previewing the picture on the small LCD screen that most modern digital cameras offer. Previewing also allows for deleting the pictures that you don’t like, although with the large amount of memory space available this won’t necessarily be a persistent problem.
The term “photo developing” is also lacking from a digital photographer’s vocabulary. The days of wait and the special conditions required to develop film photographs are now over, as the digital content is stored electronically and it can be easily downloaded to another electronic device such as a computer, laptop, phone, photo printer and so forth. Digital photos can also be “retouched” with ease, with the help of the numerous photo editing software available today. To name just a few of the most popular such programs, we can include Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Macromedia Fireworks, Corel Draw or GIMP.
This said, although digital photography still has a few minor glitches that future technology will undoubtedly fix, it remains today’s photography method of choice for both amateurs and professionals. Its ease of use, photo management capabilities and the ability to retouch the photos after they have been made has boosted digital photography as one of the most popular hobbies of today.
